Painting with Soft Pastels

Whether you’re picking up pastels for the first time or looking to refine your skills, this workshop will guide you through the fundamentals while allowing room for creativity and personal expression.
Techniques and Layering
Soft pastels are known for their intense color, velvety texture, and effortless blending. Unlike other painting mediums, pastels don’t require brushes or water – just pure pigment in stick form, allowing for direct and immediate application. We love them for their rich, luminous colors and the ability to create everything from bold, dramatic strokes to delicate, soft shading.
What You’ll Learn in the Workshop – Understanding Pastel Types & Surfaces – Learn about different kinds of pastels and the best papers for achieving various effects. Blending & Layering Techniques – Discover how to blend colors seamlessly using your fingers, blending tools, or pastel brushes. Mark-Making & Texture – Experiment with different strokes, hatching, and scumbling to create depth and movement.
Art Instructor
Katerina Krjanina’s workshops in soft pastel flower painting are more than just technical instruction – they are immersive, sensory experiences. She begins by inviting students to slow down, observe, and truly see their subject. A bloom, in Katerina’s eyes, is not merely a shape and color – it’s a personality, a whisper of nature that each artist must interpret in their own voice.
Her approach blends structured guidance with creative freedom. Early in the session, she demonstrates foundational techniques: layering pastel for depth, blending for soft transitions, and using the side or edge of a stick for textural effects. She explains not only the how but the why – how different strokes can evoke the velvet softness of a petal, or how subtle shifts in hue can make a flower appear to glow from within.
